NDPC DIRECTOR-GENERAL HIGHLIGHTS PRIVATE SECTOR’ROS ROLE IN SUSTAINABLE NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT AT MOBILE WATER’S 30TH ANNIVERSARY

The Director-General of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), Dr Audrey Smock Amoah, has highlighted the contribution of Ghanaian enterprises to job creation, economic growth and sustainable national development, citing Magvlyn Industries Limited, manufacturers of Mobile Water, as an example of a Ghanaian business that has grown through reinvestment and innovation.

Speaking at the company’s 30th anniversary celebration, held under the theme, “The Role of Ghanaian Enterprises in Advancing Sustainable National Development,” Dr Amoah noted that Magvlyn’s growth from a small-scale operation in a family home in Accra in 1996 to an expanded business demonstrated the potential of Ghanaian enterprises to drive structural transformation.

She emphasised that micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) were central to Ghana’s economy, contributing to employment creation, household incomes and national output.

Dr Amoah also underscored the importance of tax compliance, good corporate governance and environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices in building sustainable businesses. She noted that responsible business practices strengthened accountability and supported long-term business sustainability while contributing to national development.

She further noted that Magvlyn’s expansion into Togo, Benin and Liberia demonstrated the potential of Ghanaian enterprises to compete and grow beyond the domestic market. Referring to the Ghana Investment Promotion Authority Act, 2026 (Act 1173), she highlighted the opportunities available to Ghanaian-owned enterprises to expand their investments, particularly within Africa. She encouraged established businesses to explore these opportunities to extend Ghanaian brands across the continent under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Dr Amoah also encouraged businesses to align their investments with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She noted that Magvlyn’s contribution to access to drinking water, employment creation and distribution networks illustrated how private enterprises could support national development priorities.

The Chief Executive Officer of Magvlyn Industries Limited, Mr Magnus Nunoo, highlighted the company’s 30 years of experience in water production, its investment in technology and its efforts to make quality drinking water accessible to Ghanaians across different income groups.

He explained that the company had diversified from sachet water production into bottled water, jar water and commercial water treatment, with plans to bring safe drinking water closer to communities. He also emphasised that sachet and bottled water were subject to the same quality standards, although their packaging differed.

On environmental sustainability, Mr Nunoo noted that addressing plastic waste required more than public campaigns against littering. He called on the authorities to provide adequate waste bins and disposal infrastructure, alongside the effective enforcement of anti-littering regulations.
